Built in 1937, the Westinghouse Atom Smasher in Forest Hills, PA (the large, bulb-shaped structure on the right) paved the way for researching nonmilitary uses for nuclear energy. It was mothballed in 1958, and when I photographed it in 2013 there was hope to preserve the structure as part of a school. Two years later, however, it was torn down.

Company scientists used the structure to create nuclear reactions. Westinghouse Electric Company is the world's leading supplier of safe, innovative nuclear technology and is shaping the future of carbon-free energy solutions.
